Don't Do Me Like December

wrob's music videos

A list - greatest concert ever

B list - specialty occasions

C list - oblivion

My holiday set has expanded to four songs. That's a lot of year-round memorization for only one month of performing, but they all refuse to retire.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B15TZQP8V_0

You can do me like September, embraced by summer's embers

You can do me like October, i fall for you over and over

You can do me like November, as genocide we remember

But please don't do me like December 'cause that's when my baby left me

She cut a hole in my stocking and pooped under the tree

That's when my heart was dismembered, so please don't do me like December

You can do me like January, by a fire making merry

You can do me like February, bookie nookie in the library

You can do me like March, under a matriarchal arch

But please don't do me like December 'cause that's when my baby left me

She cut a hole in my stocking and pooped under the tree

That's when my heart was dismembered, so please don't do me like December

You can do me like April, on the top of a hill

You can do me like May, on make-you-a-mother day

You can do me like leap day, don't hide our love away

You can do me anyplace, beyond time beyond space

You can do me like June, under a reparations moon

You can do me like July, you always make me sigh

You can do me like August, sweaty summer lust

But please don't do me like December 'cause that's when my baby left me

She cut a hole in my stocking and pooped under the tree

That's when my heart was dismembered, so please don't do me like December

"Stiffed (The Betrayal of the American Man)"

-by susan faludi

1999

Towering...almost breathtakingly so.

Faludi turns her eye on what it means to be an american male, and how that has evolved (or devolved) in the media, corporate-capitalist age. The last male generation to stand on seemingly-solid ground were those who came of age during post-WWII prosperity. For anyone of the 60s or beyond, only shifting sand beneath. Once, employment loyalty was a two-way street, providing meaning and security for a lifetime. Now, downsizing. Once, the image of the father figure was strong, and war films celebrated brotherhood. Now, father figures are more distant or absent, and war films focus on the individual. Once, men knew it was THEIR job to provide, and the american mission was to conquer a continent (and ultimately the world). Now, those paradigms are obsolete, if not painful. And in the new world economy, most workers live with the conscious (or subconscious) awareness of producing nothing tangible.

In America, male success is measured by impossible standards of wealth, plus a beauty requirement heretofore only expected of females.

Faludi's perspective is by no means the only one by which to understand male alienation. You could discuss an ape evolutionarily designed for tribal sharing, thrust into a paradigm of individualism...

You might not agree with her every interpretation, but in the big picture, as no less a humynitarian than arnold schwarzenegger attests. faludi "hits the nail on the head".

The breadth of this book is stunning (and often surprising). There are sections on sports fandom, the male-dominated construction industries, gangbanger celebrity, the corporatizing of the military, the significance of "Rambo", the Promise Keepers, the porn industry, and astronaut as "hero". The only minimally-relevant section is Waco - it's okay to skip that one.

Faludi's eye can be startling and terrifying...yet ultimately hopeful, as she speculates on how men can reclaim their identity by joining the community of life.

"Star Trek: Picard"

The first season looks great, but struggles to find its identity, and feels even less like TREK than Discovery. The glorification of violence is worthy only of that OTHER lame-ass (and disneyfied) franchise...in particular, seven's revenge killing of the romulan sister is shot in such a "money-shot" way that you'd be justified in never watching another second.

Season 2 shows improvement...it finds its identity, and becomes decent storytelling. But still, the spirit of the original vision is gasping for breath, at best.

I rescued the original lyrics, and wrote new verses of my own. This one immediately grabbed its spot on the A list, and i can't imagine a universe in which it budges therefrom. R3

Dear r,

When we were young, i constantly invalidated your feelings. And now, having spent the past twenty years trying to reclaim the emotional life that was stolen from me as a child by this macho, fear-based culture of alienation, i realize that the deepest emotional resonance i ever suppressed was my love for you.

Now you ask me to erase that.

Trying to do so, gives birth to another new feeling - tasting death. After struggling so long to uncover my truth, the thought of returning to the emotional neuter i once was is exquisitely painful.

But ironically, your request makes me even MORE capable of being the man you've always needed. To now feel raw invalidation from you, the person for whom i am most vulnerable*, makes me understand in a non-abstract way how my behavior affected you...and that shame may never wash away. But it also means that no one in this world will ever protect you as relentlessly.

Your position is understandable. You choose the safe and second-rate, rather than risk your heart on me, a proven idiot. One of the thousand ironies in our relationship is that if i hadn't helped make you more cynical and fearful, we'd already be together.

To own these feelings i've spent a lifetime suppressing, is overwhelming. To realize what would happen if i let myself love you...how i would be transformed, when no experience has EVER transformed me...

To see the glimmers of how self-possessed YOU would become, if nourished by the love you've always needed...

To know how jarring it will be for you to finally meet me with my emotions open...

I spent our youth waiting for you to figure us out. It wasn't YOU who was confused, it was me.

If you let our hearts touch again, you will feel safer than you've ever imagined feeling. You will know that i'll be whatever you need. Loving you will be at the center of my life.

Your light, joyful side will become dominant in your personality (or maybe that part of you is already more ascendant than i realize, as our interactions have always furrowed your brow).

Perhaps the reason you never threw me away in all those years of my neglect, was because you knew that whatever my failings, i always heard every word you said. So these are not (merely) the rantings of a lunatic. I KNOW the kind of love you need, to become the person your life has stolen from you. I've spent a lifetime studying you...and i'm coming. Let our hearts touch once more, and you won't be able to imagine life without my arms around you.

Or we can both go on pretending we might find that in someone else.

I could live with the thought that i'll never have the great love of my life. The thought that YOU might not, is the pill that won't go down.

love,

wrob

*When you judged my life harshly this year because i might not have a real bed, that hurt. Even though your moral compass may not have been functioning when you spoke those words, i still hurt.

P.S. You're not insane for closing your heart...there are reasons why i'm emotionally suspect. I'm drowning in feelings...plus the anguish of being this old without finding deepest love...how many virile years are left? Has this made me reckless? Is there also a level that has nothing to do with YOU, just my fascination at speaking these words, and FEELING them? Knowing that if i don't speak them to you, i'll probably never speak them to anyone? But my relentless self-awareness could become one of the greatest gifts in your life, as we strive to reach the heart of both our damaged spirits. And sure, part of my rational brain LOVES that you're keeping us apart. A part of my brain wants to hold on to the quixotic, lone wolf ME. A part of me doesn't want to be transformed by love, and learn compromise. Shall i be the first person in the world to voluntarily move to Cleveland? But let me in once, and you'll never keep me away.

P.P.S. A year ago, i finally understood how much i've thrown away. Perhaps that's how it had to be, because never before could i have held you and been 100% present. I know the stakes, and that you've now erased a year of our loving. Hundreds of times we would have had the best sex of our lives! You were patient with my idiocy for so many years, but i can't return the favor.

P.P.P.S. As fortune would have it, we might never find someone more perfectly matched to each other's sexual rhythms and preferences. The one compromise i would make, would be no sacrifice at all. Instead of always extending orgasmless sex for an hour or two, i would respond to any impending orgasm on your part with pulsing to push you over the top. I'd probably lose control, which means that simultaneous orgasms would be commonplace for us. I already know, when i strip away my bullshit, that the one time i held you while you came, was the most beautiful moment of my life. So i can't even wrap my head around what it will feel like to experience that, while inside you. We will never touch such desperate joy - you've already admitted as much. You're afraid that my love wouldn't endure, or that i would stray, but if you recapture the vulnerability of our first night, you will find in me a love more unconditional and devoted than anything you've ever imagined.

P.P.P.S. I think deep down you understand how deeply you would fall for me, given the chance. That has to be frightful, given my record. I erased our first fifteen years, because of my idiocy. Now it's on you to not erase the rest of our lives, because of your sensibility.

P.P.P.P.S. When you pointed me in this direction a year ago, you must have never imagined i'd actually go there...

P.P.P.P.P.S. All of this feels like i'm being tested...if i agree for even one second that it's okay for us to not be together, i'll lose my grasp on my spirit, which i've spent a lifetime struggling to free.

P.P.P.P.P.P.S. I think about the role coincidence can play in our lives. If i hadn't walked into that Port Authority pharmacy, when we'd been out of touch so long that i had no idea you were living in NYC...would we have drifted apart forever? On the other end, happenstances that DON'T happen...if your Branson show hadn't shuttered, and i'd delivered your three-day booty call, would that moment have been transformative enough for us to be together always? I suspect yes. I want to believe the act of physically loving you would have shattered my remaining denials and fears. But now, i live everyday with the crucifying awareness that i held you so many times, and never for one second took you seriously. I think deep down you realize that with me, you might find your true fearlessness too. In this world, that prospect could terrify anyone.

P.P.P.P.P.P.P.S. Isn't it fascinating that i ran away from you all my life, and you never stopped wanting me...but the moment i ran to you, you DIDN'T want me? In the time of our reconnection since your divorce, you have (as always) pushed us toward each other. And now here we are - i'm going exactly where you pointed me this past year, and boom - you turn and run. If it weren't tragic, it would be hysterical. If you're ever tempted to beat yourself up for hiding when the great love of your life came calling...resist the urge. We do the best we can. Most of the time that amounts to crap.

P.P.P.P.P.P.P.P.S. Here are the songs i've written for you this past year. Audiences loved the first, but it's the third that feels best...i got away from the confessional style to the story song.

"autobiography of a blue-eyed devil"

(my life and times in a racist, imperialist society)

-by inga muscio

2005

Be sure you get the updated 2014 edition.

I despair of doing justice to this brilliant, essential book. Not every author has two great books in them - indeed, a reasonable expectation is otherwise. But inga has scaled the same heights she took her debut, "Cunt". Superlatives fail. This book is a hardcore eye-opener.

I'm not one for self-recrimination. I try to lead all my interactions with radical forgiveness...for myself included. But this sweeping, scathing book had me looking hard at my own life. My reaction to living in this morally bankrupt society has always been non-cooperation. Do NOT chase the money and privilege my birth status prepared for me. Do not follow the hypocritical religion foisted upon me as a child. Do NOT grab a high-status job - leave that slot for someone with ovaries or differing pigmentation. Do NOT marry a white womyn or make white babies, to keep the money in the white world.

That's well and good...

But inga has me facing how pathetically little i've done to proactively dismantle white patriarchy.

This is one of the few books i've ever read, which i won't immediately pass on to someone else. Oh, i'll find other copies to give to those i love, but i might need to re-read the glossary of examined terms, for a hard reminder of what sane sensitivity feels like. If you don't have time to read the book yet, just read that glossary...

You might find yourself doing so again and again.

"The Cafe on the Edge of the World"

(a Story About the Meaning of Life)

-by john strelecky

2020

Now translated into 42 languages! (though one might have been more than enough)

I probably shouldn't hate too hard on this book...especially when a small part of my ire is that the writer is reaping huge societal rewards, despite being largely talentless. Unlike (ahem) myself.

But this book is so badly written, that one must acknowledge the possibility that it's intended as a joke, a parody of self-help philosophy. Will people desperate for meaning believe anything, the writer wonders? The dialogue is horrible...just winky and wooden. If you met people who actually talked like this, you might smack them.

Let's assume, however, it's sincere! Its core message, that we all live unfulfilled, materialistic, fear-based lives, and that the solution is to find the activity that fills you with desire and purpose, and DO that, regardless of where it goes or what it pays...

Well, that's not patently wrong. In and of itself, it's reasonably wise.

The problem is strelecky's painful simplism. Like all self-help, the book is founded on the premise that the problem is in YOU. But the problems of our culture are not individual, they're systemic, and focusing on YOU won't mean a piss against that.

Strelecky then descends into drivel, such as "we each control our own destiny, and seemingly-magical coincidences happen for those who are deeply committed to their purpose". Well, no. Humyns are social creatures, YOU do not control your destiny. And anyone who understands statistics and probability knows that "magical-feeling" things happen to everyone, about once a month. If you start to believe those things have grander, deeper meaning, you're onboard the woo-woo train.

I can understand why this book was recommended to me, by someone who thought they'd found a deep insight into MY personality. Yes, there's a seed of truth there. But if this book affects you deeply...please go deeper!

Never Ask

Never ask a poet about your poem

Never ask a painter about your art

Never ask a musician about your tune

Never ask family about your life

And never ever ever

ask someone who wants to fuck you

for truth
