This one persists on the A list despite being somewhat innocuous for me...but that's part of its charm, as it's just a tightly-constructed, feel-good song. I'm just as proud of the music as i am the words. In a full concert, it will be a mind-melting break from the seriousness and high-concept humor.

ani

The greatest living lyricists are randy newman and ani difranco. I discovered ani's music many years after she arrived on the scene in the 90s, but once i found her, it's been a non-stop love affair. No other songwriter is so relentlessly, non-apologetically political. And if you've never seen her play, you might assume that she's not the one thrashing that distinctive, powerful guitar...but it's all ani. She may still have as full a career ahead as what's behind...but as it stands, here's the dream concert.

This song makes me ache, it feels like one of my five best...yet there it languishes in C land. Why? Because six audiences loved it, and one thought it was so horrible they never wanted me to play there again. Maybe. They didn't actually come out and tell me that, but...anyway, perhaps i should have fought for this one, and maybe it will live again one day when my songs are beloved by millions.
